This week, we are featuring Megan Livie who is a high school student by day and a kick-ass photographer by night (and weekends).
Who Megan Livie? Can you share a quick bio with us — where you’re from, what you do, and how you got where you are?
Hello! I’m Megan Livie, a portrait photographer based in Merrimack, New Hampshire. I’ve been a photographer for about 2 years now, and I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life. Photography for me, started out as a hobby that I didn’t really think much of, and over time I’ve realized that this is what I want to do with my life. While I enjoy scenery and city life photography as well, portraits are my forte.
What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, when I’m not taking pictures, I enjoy painting. I also enjoy going on adventures, and occasionally I take flight lessons. Also, I’m a coffee barista, so I love making coffee and attempting latte art.
What gives you creative inspiration for your photography?
There’s not one specific thing that inspires my photography. My inspiration comes from a variety of sources, but I love showing how I view the world through photography. The styles in my photography come directly from my own style, and as I grow as a person over the years, my photography changes with me.
As a photographer, you must love Instagram. What is your favorite account to follow and why?
My favorite account on Instagram to follow is probably @samuelelkins, I absolutely love his style of photography and I gain so much inspiration from following his account.
What is a piece of advice you’d give to someone trying to break into the world of photography?
Some advice I have for anyone trying to break into the world of photography is create what you love. If your photography reflects your passions and who you are, it has character. People can tell when work comes from the soul vs. when it’s done just for a paycheck. Also, accept the fact that you’ll have to work the hardest if you want to be the best. None of the best photographers in the world got there by only working every once in a while. They got to where they are by working every day at their art & loving what they create.
What is your favorite picture you’ve ever taken & why?
My favorite picture I’ve ever taken is probably one that I took at Huntington Beach in California. It’s a picture of two surfers, at sunset, walking into the water. My favorite thing about it is that the two surfers are so symmetrical. Their arms are perfectly in sync with each other, their boards are perfectly lined up, and the spacing is even. Usually I don’t look at this in a photograph, but this was an unplanned picture which is why it’s one of my favorites. I had seconds to react when I saw the two heading into the water. Something inside me clicked & I could predict the good picture opportunity before it even happened. If I had taken this picture even half a second later, the balance would all be off. I also love the pillars from the boardwalk, they break up the sunlight so nicely. Overall, it’s my favorite picture because it really captures the mood of that day and the vibe of California.
Thanks Megan! Make sure you follow her on Instagram to see her latest projects.
